PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID

ONLINE & IN CLASS COURSE

This course equips learners in developing a personal understanding of the effects of stress, loss, trauma and grief on others, with emphasis on self-care and personal protection. Learners will be introduced to the Red Cross Look, Listen, Link, Live model -a resiliency-building approach to emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing that teaches learners how to support themselves and others to cope with the effects of various types of stress. The course uses primarily case-based learning and includes the latest evidence from the international community.

What makes our approach different from a mental health first aid program is our focus on providing individuals from a variety of backgrounds with tools for mental wellness. Unlike mental health first aid, our focus is not only for those dealing with people with mental illness, but for the everyday person dealing with their own or other’s stress and crises.

The Canadian Red Cross Psychological First Aid program offers:

• A case-based approach in which participants work together in groups to consider daily stresses in their own environments to collaboratively develop a case story. The group then applies the tools and strategies relevant to them to the case story; this approach helps to foster a collective culture of wellness and support.

• Participants leave the workshop:

 With their own self-care plan and tools to improve their own resiliency and mitigate the effects of distress.

 With practical take-away tools to reinforce the workshop learning daily and help them maintain a positive approach when working with others.

 Feeling empowered and more confident to support others around them that may be struggling.

 Feeling more empowered to respond when crisis happens, creating safer communities.

In a workplace setting, having both management and staff participating in the workshops will foster a cohesive approach for staff to create a safe environment within their community.
